What is a beneficiary?

Primary beneficiary is a person named by the participant to receive insurance or retirement plan benefits when the participant dies. If no primary beneficiaries are living when the insured person dies, benefits will be paid to the contingent or secondary beneficiary. Contingent or Secondary is the person named to receive death benefits only if no primary beneficiaries are living when the insured person dies.
