Can I use the debit card for expenses that will eventually be reimbursed by insurance?
No. IRS regulations prohibit the use of Health Care FSA dollars to pay for expenses that are reimbursed by insurance or any other source. For example, if your dentist requires up front payment at the time of service and you’re responsible for filing the insurance claim to recover your out-of-pocket expenses, do not use the debit card for the amount that will be reimbursed by your insurance company. Your FSA debit card should be used only for the amounts that are not reimbursable by your insurance company, typically office visit copays, hospital deductibles, prescription copays, vision care services, dental expenses and more.
